The Greatest Shirt in the History of the World

How often does it occur that one of your favorite things just happens to be your significant other's least favorite thing? Sure, Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat taught us that opposites attract, but, in reality, most couples are brought together by common likes and interests. One the whole, I think that Amanda and I seem to like a lot of the same things, but there is one thing that I love that she absolutely hates.

See, I have a shirt that I love for many, many reasons. Amanda, however, hates it. Actually, it's worse than hatred. I just can't think of a word that's worse than hatred right now. I'm actually surprised that she hasn't stolen it from my dresser and burned it to ashes.

Here is a picture of the shirt.

Now, before you make any judgments, let me tell you some of the reasons that this shirt is my favorite article of clothing of all time.

1. Just look at it. It is AMAZING!!!
2. I bought this shirt at my first Blur concert. I won't go as far as saying that Blur is the greatest band in the history of the world, but they are my favorite band in the history of the world. If you only know their one popular song here in the U.S. (the one that goes "Woo-Hoo" that they play at sporting events), you are really missing out on some other great music (I'll make you a mix tape if you ask nicely). Blur, by the way, are way better than Oasis.
3. I bought this shirt two days before my graduation from South Lakes High School. Unbelievably, that was ten years ago.
4. I went to this concert with my good high school friends Jacob Anderson, Frank Etter and Sean Shadman. I am still good friends with Jake. I hear Frank is doing well with a wife and kid. And Sean...well, I don't think I've seen him more than two or three times since that concert. Ah, high school friends.
5. At the concert, I happened to bump into my buddy Christian Markanich and some of his Herndon (boo) friends. What a pleasant surprise.
6. It turned out that the concert got out after the Metro had stopped running, so I had to drive Christian and his friends to the Vienna Metro station. The 8 of us walked to my Ford Escort station wagon, and when we got to it there was a large man sitting on the hood of the car. I walked up to the car, and he said, "I've been watching your car for you. How much you gonna give me?" I looked to my friends, and they were all still standing 10 feet away, on the opposite side of the car, afraid to approach. Great friends, huh?
7. This shirt is a little small on me, so it shows off my muscles.
8. It has a small chocolate milk stain on it (which I think was actually caused by my little brother Jacob who would wear the shirt from time to time). Nothing says Ben Mudrick like a chocolate milk stain.
9. I wore this shirt for good luck when I took the LSAT. It did the trick.
10. I often wear this shirt when I take finals in law school. For some reason, it hasn't done the trick quite as well.
11. I wore this shirt for our engagement pictures (although Amanda made me wear something over it - I told you she hates it).
12. I would've worn it under my tux for the wedding, but he logo probably would've shown through the white shirt.
13. The small holes in the armpits increase ventilation.

I'm sure I could go on, but you get the point. This shirt is full of memories, it brings me good luck, the band is amazing, and I look pretty awesome in it. Sure, Stacy and Clinton from What Not to Wear (one of Amanda's favorite shows) would probably throw it into the dumpster and tell me to buy classier stuff, but we all know the costly apparel is the first sign of apostasy.

first of all i must defend the greatest british band ever to rock (and i do not mean the beatles) i mean the holy entity that is oasis... how dare you blasphemy such a creation! that's not to say that blur isn't spectacular... it just isn't a gallegher machine.

as for number 6, christian has told me about the concert but conveniently left out the "big man sitting on your car" part of the story, interesting...

and to back up amanda... there are so many things of christian's i would like to make disappear but i don't, because when you get together it just all works out!

Oasis peaked after their second album and became a parody of themselves. Even though they wrote some great songs (which I do like) you cannot argue that they are original or creative by any means (since most of their tunes are cribbed from someone else).

Sure, their highs are arguably higher than Blur's, but Blur's overall catalog is more interesting, creative, and consistent.

I really like Ben's Blur shirt, even though Oasis is the only band for me. In fact, I've always been jealous. As Ben noted, I was at that concert in 1997. I remember seeing Ben crowd surf in the front of the club throughout the entire show. And I remember getting to the locked Metro doors in the very shady part of DC by the Capitol Ballroom (where the concert was). So, my friends and I were very thankful that Ben and his tan Ford Escort hadn't left the club yet. I do remember that "security guard" who had been watching Ben's car. But I don't remember him sitting on the car, waiting for us. And he wasn't huge, either. But he was a little shady and what 17-year-old wouldn't be afraid when he asked us for money? As I remember it, Ben handed him a crumpled $1 so it would look like more.

As for the Blur-Oasis britpop war...which of the two bands just received a 2007 Britpop Award for Lifetime Contribution to Music AND performed three songs at the show??? Interesting.

Christian, good point with the whole lifetime achievement award thing.

Oh wait, the Spice Girls won the same award in 2000. Does that make them better than Oasis? Well, I guess Spice World was a pretty good movie.

Ben Ben Ben... you can take heart even if Amanda throws the shirt away.

You'll always able to buy another shirt now that Blur is reuniting.

Ben,
this is my first post on your blog, great blog guys, you gots creative skillz. i remember that shirt and that concert like it was yeterday, i bet we could've taken that big dude guarding our car, but then got shot by his back up posse! I have plenty of shirts like that, except half of them, ok, 80 percent of them are handmedowns from my bro's, i'm sure they got stories about em. about every 6 months ashley makes me throw away a handful of them. Blur is a top tier band, just like the gorillaz!!!!!!!!!!
