We took off on Friday after work and made the 6 hour trek to the city. We made pretty good time considering we hit some road work. We didn't get to hit up the sites of Scranton, PA since it was so late, but oh well. Ethan took a few naps, and while he was awake he watched Toy Story (he could watch that movie repeatedly and not get sick of it). The only thing that put a damper on the trip out there was that we got a ticket in NJ. Boo! It was for turning left into a gas station where we supposedly weren't allowed to. We made it to NYC around midnight, found a parking spot pretty easily, met up with Natalie, headed to the apartment and attempted to settle in for the night. Ethan wasn't having it though. He had taken a few naps in the car and was WIDE awake. He didn't crash until about 3 in the morning. We obviously slept in the next morning because of that.
On Saturday we got up fairly late and got ready. I had forgotten my contact solution and borrowed some from the place where we were staying, but I didn't realize it was a special solution for specific cases. The stuff ended up burning my eyes! I haven't felt pain like that in my eyes since I scratched my corneas. Yowza. Anyway, we took off for the city and met up with Ben's youngest brother, Jesse, who took the train in from Princeton that morning. We went to lunch at Caracas where we waited forever for our food and then walked down to China Town and along Canal street. The place was PACKED and it was almost impossible to maneuver a child in a stroller through that place. We ended up taking a side street out of there and then made our way up to Times Square to enjoy the chaos and lights. We went into the Toys R Us and M&M store, and then took the subway a little uptown to go out to dinner with my old roommate Jane. She took us to Patsy's which is a fantastic little Italian restaurant. After dinner we went back to the apartment to put Ethan to bed and watched a little TV.
On Sunday we went down to Central Park and let Ethan play around the playground for a while. I think if I lived in Manhattan I would take Ethan there everyday. We strolled around the park for a little bit then grabbed a bite at Gray's Papaya before heading to church in the Manhattan Temple. It was interesting to go to church in a temple, and it was so quiet considering the location. After church we went down to Rockefeller Plaza and then down to the Brooklyn Bridge where we walked half of it. Just far enough to catch a glimpse of lady liberty. After that we took the subway up to Carnegie Deli to get some NY Cheesecake and then took Ethan to the playground one last time to exert all his energy. On the way home we stopped by the grocery store to buy some stuff for our gnocchi dinner. Once again we put Ethan to bed, watched a little TV and then hit the sack.
On Monday we woke up, cleaned up, packed up and took off to go visit Jesse at Princeton. Princeton is a beautiful campus, I only wish the leaves would have been turning colors when we went to visit. We didn't stay too long to visit, but we got a brief tour of the campus. We hit up a local mall to grab some lunch and then continued on our way back to Rochester. The drive home was gorgeous. We went through some really pretty hills that were full of gorgeous trees. Ethan sat in the back and watched Toy Story, then Wallace and Grommit and then Toy Story twice. Yikes. No more Toy Story for a while. He only fell asleep for about an hour or so on the ride home and by the time we got home at 8 last night he was a zombie. He went to sleep easily and then woke up totally happy this morning. That's a sign of a good trip.
Jesse being so pensive at Princeton
It was a quick weekend and we didn't do too much, but it was nice to get away just for a few days. Next time we'll have to take in a show, but I have a feeling I'll be leaving behind Ethan.
