About a year ago Ben dropped one of the 3 nesting mixing bowls that we received as a wedding gift. I was shocked that such a "durable" bowl broke. We figured that he must have dropped it on just the perfect spot, which happened to be the handle. I LOVED the bowls, and the fact that the middle one was the one that broke made me a little upset. Luckily, we went to the Williams-Sonoma outlet in Leesburg a couple weeks later and used a wedding gift card to buy a whole new 3-bowl set.
Fast forward one year later... last Tuesday Ben was making mashed potatoes when all of a sudden the potato masher broke through the bowl. The middle one again too! I was pretty upset once again, since we used the middle one the most and Ben had broken the last one too. I gave him a hard time and kept telling him that he was mashing too hard. We now had 2 large bowls and 2 small bowls. Lame.
Fast forward again to Saturday night when I was making some chocolate chip cookies. We were going to go out to eat, so I stuck the dough in the fridge before we left. The dough was ridiculously hard when we came back so I was using a metal spoon to scrape out balls of dough. My super-human strength must have been too much, because when the spoon hit the side of the bowl the entire thing cracked! Ok, so maybe it was just luck and not super-human strength, but Ben was a little sad that I was just as strong as he was to be able to break a melamine mixing bowl.
I doubt we'll be buying another set of these bowls, especially since we now have 2 small bowls and 1 large bowl. I miss my middle bowl though, so I may just need to go buy a more durable medium sized mixing bowl. Or maybe Ben and I should stop working out so much...oh wait, we don't work out at all.

That really scares me because I have those same bowls, but we don't use them as much as it seems like you guys do...or did.
Okay, that is crazy. I have been thinking of buying those bowls seeing as you and Mom M. have them. I am now officially saving my money.
Those bowls are darling!!! The thought of breaking such a great-looking bowl makes me sick to my stomach!! -Don't worry about lunch, it was so fun to hang out. I'm pretty sure I'll be in the office tomorrow so we'll have to plan a future hang out date!!!
Gee! We had ours for years and they never broke...the rubber on the bottom broke down and when you stacked them it kinda stuck to the next bowl, which was lame because you had to scrape the bowl clean each time you used it. We had to get new ones because of that problem. I bet they just aren't making them as tough or as thick as they used to be. Reminds me of the Cadbury egg saga...
man amanda that really sucks! my vote is to buy the oxo set of 3 mixing bowls (exactly the same sizes but not cute at all.. just white and black) but then you can beat them up all you want and not worry about breaking them. and even if you did... you wouldn't care so much! we got ours at crate & barrel but they have them at bed bath and beyond also!
on a side note... i was in love with these little mini juice glasses (about 4oz) and they had little orange slices on them.. PERFECT for christian's juice addiction. anyway, they are apparently made the same way as your bowls! we had six and christian has already broken two ... but they have been completely bizarre breaks, as in one cup taps another. weird!
I inherited those yellow ones with the decomposing rubber seals on the bottom. They haven't broken on me yet, but it's probably because I don't use them. I used the big one once to make a large salad that I shared with me. The other time was to serve people a salad I had lovingly prepared for a Sunday afternoon meal for the Fatherless on Father's day.
Some of them girls questioned why a mixing bowl was being used instead of a salad bowl. Luckily some other smarter girls came to my rescue saying that it was well enough that a bachelor could make a salad, let alone one as tasty as mine. If you want the medium sized one, come over and pick it up.
you guys have serious issues....
i use metal mixing bowls. ding.
How boring is your life (or I guess the lives of all of us reading this blog) when the most comments you get are for a post about broken mixing bowls?
Do you think that it has to do with the heat/cold and the expansion or contraction of the melamine? You were probably mixing hot contents when making the mashed potatos and then after you had it in the fridge it broke again. Could that be it?
I can't believe how many posts you've gotten over your mixing bowls. Maybe this can go down in blogging history!
Although the proposition that the relative heat (or coldness) of the ingredients actually compromised the structural integrity of the bowls makes a lot of sense, I'd like to think that the bowls broke solely due to our super-human strength.
That's it. I just felt like I had to keep this comment thread going.
I love beans, dugu-doo!
I am getting sooo bored of this post..............
Please update, for the greater good!
